Return Missionary Scholarship
In recognition of sound leadership and a proven commitment to study, exemplary missionaries who are of or have served in the target area but who do not qualify for any work-study scholarships (including the David O. McKay Presidential Scholarship) may be selected by their mission president to receive the equivalent of one-half tuition award for one semester to BYU–Hawaii.
Eligible students must apply for the scholarship within the first year of returning home from their mission. The scholarship is awarded during the student's first semester after returning to school.
If you have already been accepted to school and would like to serve, you will need to,
- discontinue from BYU–Hawaii (Mission Deferment or Discontinuance page)
- apply for the Return Missionary Scholarship upon returning from your mission
- The student is one who resides or has served a full-time mission in the target area.
- The student is a returned missionary with an honorable release within the past year (must be admitted or readmitted to BYU–Hawaii within 12 months of release).
- The recipient is enrolled in a minimum of 12 credit hours for the winter and fall semesters and 8 credits for spring.
- The recipient commits to abide by the Honor Code.
Students must take a full-time load (minimum of 12 credits for the Fall and Winter semesters, 8 for the Spring semester) and maintain at least a 2.0 GPA for the duration of their scholarship.
Federal financial aid and outside scholarships can be combined with the Return Missionary Scholarship. However, if they qualify for both, students will have to choose between the Return Missionary Scholarship and work-study scholarships (including the David O. McKay Presidential Scholarship).
The Return Missionary Scholarship can be used subsequently with the Seminary Graduate Scholarship.
Students will be awarded the scholarship during their first semester attending or returning to BYU–Hawaii. If you applied before you were enrolled as a student and are currently enrolled as a student on campus, please notify Financial Aid & Scholarships.
Upon submitting your scholarship application, an email will be sent to your Mission President. The Returned Missionary Scholarship application process is not complete until the recommendation is received by Financial Aid & Scholarships.
An email will be sent out from Financial Aid & Scholarships notifying you about the status of your scholarship.
